Event: Children's Art Exhibit opening this Saturday!
located just off of Newkirk Plaza on Marlborough Road. We hope to see
some of you at the art opening for our newest exhibition,
BROOKLYN: THROUGH A CHILD\'S EYES.
WHEN: Saturday, July 11, 12 - 3 pm
Free admission and refreshments.
With a special music performance by Rolie Polie Guacamole at 1pm!
ABOUT THIS EXHIBIT: For a period of seven hours on June 14, 2009, the
gallery was taken over by twenty-one children, ages three to nine, who
created over seventy pieces of art. The subjects children decided to
illustrate range from the abstract â€" color field paintings and repeat
patterns â€" to readily recognizable Brooklyn scenes, such as the
Cyclone at Coney Island and Greenwood Cemetery. These paintings and
drawings became the basis for this art exhibit, which was curated by
the children themselves.
NEW: A full color exhibition catalog is available.

Event: KWT winter CSA
I know it's way too early to think about winter, BUT the time has come, not yet
to sign up, but just to drop me a line if you are interested in being part of
the KWT Winter CSA. There were 32 shares for us last year and they need an idea
of how many to put aside this year.
Visit the website for details: www.wintersunfarms.com, click on "what's in a
share".
This is a wonderful mini-csa to carry you over through the cold months
(dec-march) with blanched/frozen local delicious veggies, berries, etc. You can
also order cheese, eggs, and other farm products. Pickup is just once a month at
the Oak and the Iris cafe, 4 times total. Cost is $128. It was a big success
last year, and the company that does it is expanding like crazy. The frozen
stewed heirloom tomatos are absolutely incredible on pizza or pasta - so much
better than any from a can.
Sign up and collection of payment will be in July.
Please let me know if you're interested, and spread the word.

thanks!

Services: BROOKLYN EMERGING ARTISTS YOUTH ROCK CAMP--- THIS AUGUST
If you have eclectic tastes in music and you love everything from indie rock to funk to rockabilly; if you believe that music can save the world and children can lead the way; if you want to pitch in and help rock your borough, then your child should plan to be at Brooklyn Emerging Artists (B.E.A.) Rock Camp.
B.E.A. Rock Camp is a week long music camp, dedicated to empowering youth, regardless of financial need, through musical collaboration, and it is the only coeducational rock camp in the city. Camp will take place in Brooklyn from August 10-15, 2009, but kids from all over the New York City area and beyond are welcome. Campers do not need any previous musical experience. Camp volunteers will offer group instrumental lessons, both beginning and advanced, in guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, vocals, violin, horns, and turn-tables, and will also involve campers in workshops that encompass many genres and facets of music, such as DIY recording, music history/theory, ‘zine’ making, and visual art. Campers will create their own bands at the beginning of camp week, and they will use what they\'ve learned to collaborate on a song for performance at the culminating Saturday Night Showcase at a real NYC venue for friends, families and fans. Each day at camp, a working New York City band will perform for campers. Theses performances will span genres, from hip-hop, country, classical to indie rock, allowing campers a chance to experience all types of music from some of the best musicians NYC has to offer.
B.E.A. Rock Camp tuition is specifically kept at a low $200 for the week, including equipment, instruction, workshops, lunch, and a camp t-shirt, so that all kids may attend camp. Half and full scholarships are also available. No child will be turned away due to financial need.
To find out more about camp, please contact us at bearockcamp@gmail.com or call us at 718-284-0547. Camper slots are still available, but the summer is fast approaching, so get your child involved today! Check us out online at www.bearockcamp.org for camp schedule, rates, location and more. You can also find us on myspace.com/bearockcamp, facebook and twitter.
B.E.A. Rock Camp is a chance of a lifetime. Don’t let your child miss out on this opportunity to rock!
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE:
B.E.A. Rock Camp is a project of Brooklyn Emerging Artists, sponsored by the Department of Secular Arts Programming at Greenpoint Reformed Church, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, and is made possible only through the generous donations of its funders and the hard work and dedication of its volunteers. If you want to get involved as either a camper or a volunteer, or if you wish to donate to or sponsor the camp, please visit the camp’s website at www.bearockcamp.org or email bearockcamp@gmail.com.

About the Founders of BEA Rock Camp
Katie Blankenship, Founder, co-Executive Director, Volunteer Coordinator.â€"Katie Blankenship is a musician and an art administrator who graduated December, 2008, with her Masters of Arts from New York University. She sings, write songs, and plays guitar and banjo with an all girl Brooklyn band, “The Havens,†whose focus is on original music influenced by “old timey†mountain music such as that written and performed by The Carter family, Stephen Foster and other classic American songwriters. She became inspired to bring a rock camp to Brooklyn while researching her master’s thesis, “The Non-Profit Art Center,†and participating as a volunteer at the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp in Murfreesboro, TN. Seeing how rock camps empower and excite campers and volunteers alike to learn and make music was so inspiring that she knew she wanted to bring this opportunity to Brooklyn.
Elizabeth Price, Founder, co-Executive Director, Program Coordinator-Beth Price is a composer and bass player, as well as co-founder of Brooklyn Emerging Artists, an arts organization dedicated to spreading new art and music by emergent artists to the New York City community at large. Beth received her master’s degree in Music Composition from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and her Bachelor’s Degree from Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. Her compositions have premiered in Boston, Rochester, NY and at celebrated venues, such as the Juilliard School and Galapagos Art Space in New York City. Beth is also double bassist and active member of the all-girl, country band, The Havens. Beth is passionate about spreading music, regardless of genre, to NYC youth across the five boroughs.
Rachael Benjamin, Administrative Director--Rachael Benjamin, LMSW, is a musician and social worker. Her music experience includes scholarship work in voice and oboe at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. Rachael obtained her MSSW in clinical work and program development from Columbia University, New York, New York, and practices at The Guidance Center of Brooklyn Heights. After completing graduate school she began learning more about traditional mountain music and now plays with both “The Havens†and “Peaks and Valleys†as a songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and autoharp player. She was elected in 2008 as deacon at Greenpoint Reformed Church, and serves in a leadership position in that church’s consistory.

Services: Piano Lessons
Hi everyone,
My name is Michelle and I've been been teaching beginners through advanced for the past 15 years primarily in Park Slope and the Ditmas-Prospect Park South area.
I'm a composer of film, songwriter (Ben E.King, Adele Zane, Liza Lee to name a few).
My playing can be currently heard as part of the soundtrack for "Puccini for Beginners, which has recently been playing on the Showtime channel.
I love teaching all ages from the very young beginner to the more advanced older student.
I teach out of my home studio or am glad to travel to you.
Each lesson is individually geared towards what works best for the student, though I believe strongly in a sound foundation based on technique and being able to read music.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Michelle
